Coach L.D. Bruce was an All-State center at Crossville High and a United States Coast Guard veteran. Coach Bruce graduated college from Jacksonville State University where he became the co-captain of the football team in 1947. In 1960 Coach Bruce made basketball history in Cherokee County by leading Cedar Bluff High School to the state tournament. It was the first time a Cherokee County team had ever played in the tournament. On December 6, 1986 Cherokee County observed L.D. Bruce Day.
