Ronald Rooks ( Ickey, as he was known by his friends ) was a multi-sport athlete. During his playing days at Hatcher High School, Ronald was a standout in basketball, football, and track. In basketball he was selected to numerous tournament teams. In the final game of his career at Hatcher High, Ronald scored 39 points in the district tournament. He was a 2 time All- Conference selection in football as an offensive end. Ronald moved to Cherokee County High for his senior year. He was the first black player to start in basketball at Cherokee County High. He helped lead the Warriors to a second place finish in the state in 1969 and was voted to the All State team. Ronald was also a member of the 1969 track team for the Warriors and finished 2nd in the state in the long jump @ 21’ 10 ¾”. After high school, Ronald signed a basketball scholarship with St. Bernard College where he was a 4 year starter. He was selected to the All Conference team as a freshman. He accomplished a career high 50 points in one game.
