Steve Ray was the most prolific passer ever to don the purple and white at Gaylesville High School. Under the guidance of legendary Coach Jack Jones, Ray would chalk up a school single-season record 2,124 yards passing while leading Gaylesville to a 9-1-1 record and an area championship in 1980. Ray completed 60 percent of his passes, including 24 touchdowns with only five interceptions. Ray’s efforts would earn him all-state accolades on the gridiron. Ray was also a dominate force on the hardcourt. The sharpshooting guard logged 22 points per contest prior to the advent of the 3-poing line during the 1980-81 season. The Trojans’ season would come to a close in a 50-49 semifinal loss to Sand Rock. Gaylesville posted an 18-9 mark. A consummate team player, Ray led by example. Coaches applauded his work ethic, determination and ability to involve his teammates. Ray’s teammates respected his drive and cool demeanor under pressure. Fans will never forget the purple passion Ray brought to every game he played for the Trojans.
