He would advance to Technician 4th grade in the 1947th Engineer Utilities Company. Upon his return, he graduated from Carver High School in Gadsden. From there, it was on to Alabama State University where he excelled in football and baseball. Weatherly would receive his Master’s degree from Georgia State University. Employed by the Cherokee County Board of Education, Weatherly taught mathematics and physical education at Hatcher High School as well as serving as assistant principal. He organized all of the sports programs for boys and girls, and led the fundraising to build, improve and maintain facilities. In 1959, Weatherly coached Hatcher to a berth in the N.E.I.A.A. Final Four. The, in 1961, the Bulldogs finished as state runner-up. Most importantly, Weatherly provided inspiration for young men and women to reach their dreams. In 1969, Hatcher High school was closed and Weatherly was moved to Spring Garden High School. After a short period there, he became the head coach at Cobb Avenue High School in Anniston. Weatherly’s 1973 team won the regional championship and finished as the AHSAA Class 4A runner-up in the state tournament. In 1974, Weatherly accepted a coaching position at Georgia School for the Deaf in Cave Springs, Ga. where he would remain until his retirement twenty-one years later.
